The Flying High Hall of Fame celebrates the extraordinary women who have made significant contributions to the Missoula Businesswomen's Network and society. Each woman has helped raise the standards and level of professionalism in business, while inspiring and mentoring future generations, laying the groundwork that encourages us all to strive for excellence. March’s winner is no exception. Deirdre Flaherty has served in many capacities on the MBN Synergy Board, as well as the Symposium Committee including MBN President and Symposium Chair. She has not only served on the board, she has also performed some Barbara Streisand on stage at a meeting, and who could forget her wonderful golf skills at the Annual Retreat!
Deirdre also volunteers for the ROOTS program at the Missoula Food Bank, delivering food from the Food Bank to elderly residents who are unable to pick up their own food. She is actively involved in the Fiesta for Flagship Program and teaches Sunday School each week. She is a volunteer for Missoula Community Theatre, First Night Missoula, Big Sky Film Festival, Missoula Relay for Life, and has presented at UM’s Business School’s Ask an Alum. She continues to serve as a board member of her Home Owner’s Association and as Vice President of Education for her Toastmasters group. Deirdre also physically active and continues to raise funds for the Missoula Youth Homes, running on their Marathon Team.
Deirdre is someone women can aspire to be like, both personally and professionally. She helps empower women and contributes to the community in so many ways, and she does it all without publicity and acknowledgment. She does it because she loves volunteering her time and contributing to the great community in which she lives and works.
She is also so very passionate about the YWCA. When she was approached about four years ago to help prepare a meal for the YWCA Tuesday night groups, she quickly jumped at the chance. She organized a group of women to start preparing a hot meal for the attendees, and she soon recruited others to help prepare dinners for other Tuesday nights. Now, because of her contagious passion for a worthy cause, women in the community are able to prepare meals each Tuesday night for the YWCA’s groups. In addition, she was asked to serve on the YWCA board of directors in 2010. Her duties were winding down with the MBN board, and she was honored to be asked, and even more honored to work with amazing women working to help families in the community.
She does so much for the community and doesn’t like the recognition that comes with it – which makes her an even better candidate for this award because she doesn’t think she deserves it. She is embarrassed to talk about herself, her activities, and what she does for the community, except when it comes to advocating a cause close to her heart!
Deirdre holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Montana and is co-owner of Flaherty Financial Services. Together with her business partner and mom, Frankie Flaherty, they have developed a reputation for being fair, honest, and caring advisors who help their clients plan for their futures.
